" Cachet " A term designating the addition of artwork and information to the left side of the envelope. The "Cachet" provides an enhanced and informative document more readily collected. Unique Covers Where the artist has the freedom to draw or paint One of A Kind "Unique" cachets? This is a creative doorway, ideal for an artist to express themselves with Minature Art. Certainly a good way to get started or a preferred method for cartoonist, minute sketch artists, Chineese brush artists, etc. Just stick your stamp on the upper right corner of the envelope and with a pencil, brush or pen tackle that empty space on the left. And, "Wha-La" you have an Artist Cover. Limited Edition - Printmaking: Linocut & Woodblock Prints, Etching, Original Rubber Stamps lend themselves in varying degrees to creating limited editions cachets. The collectibility is enhanced when signed and numbered. Pre Printed Envelopes Most home printers allow envelopes to be printed with a "cachets" of the artist's design. These can be either a base drawing to be individually hand colored or they can be a complete image similar to a miniature giclee print. " Artist Signature " Signing and dating art work is always a good idea as is numbering a limited edition. " Return Address " Consider the additional design space and clarity when the return address is placed on revers side of envelope. " Stamps " The stamps are designed by the artists themselves but printed under license from the US Post Office where each stamp has a unique computer code that proves payment to the PO. Stamp.com, Zazzle.com & Endicia.com are several of the US companies that are licensed to provide this service. Japan, Australia & Great Britain also license agencies to provide variations of this service. " Value " Do to the new and uniqueness of this endeavor there are several ways to consider value. Intrinsic Value Initially the creating, learning and sharing experience will provide pleasure and reward for the artist creator / artist collector. Market Value In the beginning (Feb. 2011) the market is yet to be established. At first it will be a traders' market, but as artists are now testing sales on the Internet it is only a matter of time before "Artist Covers" are offered on Ebay and Etsy. Since the cost to an artist to produce an artist cover is less than a dollar it really is more a consideration of the value of an artist's time. In comparison when artist's miniatures are duplicated as prints or giclees they often start in the price range of $10 to $50. Established artists command a higher price. When an edition is signed and numbered the value is also increased. As more artists and collectors get interested the monetary value should begin to climb. The nature of collecting is once established the early items will be highly prized and sought after. It behooves the artist to keep this in mind and hold back a few postmarked covers for greater return in the future. Who knows what prices will be quoted on a future "Antique Roadshow". " Collecting " Artist To Artist Exchange Initially collections will be an insider endeavor. Besides the pleasure of sharing and learning within the artist community now is the time to set the parameters for what "Artist Covers" will become. This will no doubt be a combination of design and organic happening uniting a broad base community of artists. Wave Action As artist begin mailing Artist Covers to friends, clients, and others in the broader arts community the number of people becoming aware of collecting will expand like a wave. The ACs can be used as a marketing and branding tool. By including a short explanatory note inside the cover it is more likely to be retained and the artist remembered. The immediate reward will be feedback and a greater demand for "Artist Covers". Art Collections There are nearly as many reasons people build / gather art collections as there are people. In addition to filling numerous traditional niches "Artist Covers" have the capacity to introduce art collecting to a broader base of the population. ACs can become the Peoples Art provided primarily by the artists themselves. This page is meant as an open resource with comments and additions welcome. |
